FLESHOLD CROSSING

Fleshold Crossing is the gateway into the world of TERMINUS. It is here that the player begin their quest by crossing a threshold both physically and in their virtual experience.

Influenced by the popular sci-fi trope of the “way station” planet, the vast possibilities of the Terminus universe are here first revealed to the player. The Fleshold Crossing experience is a spaghetti junction of pathways, travellators, and scrolling hieroglyphics that offer fleeting glimpses into other worlds. The journey culminates in the player passing between two giant alien sphinxes, thereby crossing into the next realm. Sphinxes feature in numerous religions as guardians of the gateways to the gods, as well as keepers of esoteric knowledge that can be gained by solving a puzzle or riddle.

KNOWN UNKNOWN

In Known Unknown, the player will have space for respite and internal contemplation as the mysteries of Terminus begin to unfold.

Here the player is seated on a meditative viewing platform in the sky, far above labyrinthine horizons. Humanoids perform rhythmic movements in the distance. Shifting shadows suggest larger planetary rotations and long cosmic cycles. Looping, circular motifs allude to time and reality being of a cyclical nature in eternal return.

SCUMM ENGINE

In the Scumm Engine experience, the player has entered the giant planetary engine room of Terminus, an improbable, treacherous treadmill from which escape seems impossible.

The player will attempt to find her way through an endless maze of gear-like columns, continually shifting architecture, and disorientating physics. Both time and space time are distorted in this realm; the dominant sensation is of traveling great distances while never moving from one position.

GOG + MAGOG

In the Gog & Magog experience, the player has entered the dark heart of their perilous journey. Whilst they are closest to that which they seek, they also risk coming to the attention of the malevolent guardians of Terminus.

The player must vertically traverse an ominous tower, passing through various chambers as she goes. At the top of the tower a giant sphere is guarded by the twin spiders, Gog & Magog. The sphere is revealed to be a hyperbolic chamber filled with entwined bodies, curled in fetal positions and floating in suspended animation.

TUMBLEWYCH

The Tumblewych experience provides the climactic culmination of the Terminus journey as the player is catapulted into a psychedelic trip of escalating sensory stimulation.

A major cinematic influence for Tumblewych was the nightmarish boat trip down the river of chocolate in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In Tumblewych, the player moves through the belly of a great worm, encountering an escalating cacophony of rushing imagery, shifting perspectives, and meta journeys into micro and macro worlds. Tumblewych summarizes the psychological transformation that the player undergoes in her ­Terminus experience.
